A RESIDENT of Kivule in Ilala District, Dar es Salaam, Cosmas Chacha (45), has been sentenced to five years in prison for mutilating his three children and causing them injuries.
The accused was sentenced yesterday by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court before the Chief Resident Magistrate, Rashid Chaungu after the court found that he had committed the offense.
In the case, the prosecution had six witnesses and three exhibits with the defendant defending himself.
Reading out the verdict, Judge Chaungu said the Republican side had been able to prove the charges without leaving any doubt and the court had convicted him of three counts.
He said for each offense the accused will go to jail for five years, pay a total compensation of Sh3 million and all the penalties go together.
In the indictment it is alleged that, on December 8, last year in the Kivule area, the accused mutilated his three children under the age of 18 and caused them serious injuries.
Defendant took the children to the relatives while they were being raised and promised to take care of them but instead cut them off.

Mshtakiwa alihukumiwa jana na Mahakama ya Hakimu Mkazi Kisutu mbele ya Hakimu Mkazi Mkuu, Rashid Chaungu baada ya mahakama kujiridhisha kwamba alitenda makosa hayo.
Katika kesi hiyo, upande wa mashtaka ulikuwa na mashahidi sita na vielelezo vitatu huku mshtakiwa akijitetea mwenyewe.
Akisoma hukumu hiyo, Hakimu Chaungu alisema upande wa Jamhuri umeweza kuthibitisha mashtaka bila kuacha shaka yoyote hivyo mahakama imemtia hatiani kwa makosa matatu.
Alisema kila kosa mshtakiwa atakwenda jela miaka mitano, atalipa fidia ya jumla Sh milioni tatu na adhabu zote zinakwenda kwa pamoja.
Katika hati ya mashtaka inadaiwa, Desemba 8, mwaka jana maeneo ya Kivule mshtakiwa aliwakeketa watoto wake watatu wenye umri chini ya miaka 18 na kuwasababishia majeraha makubwa.
Mshtakiwa alichukua watoto hao kwa ndugu walipokuwa wanalelewa na kuahidi kuwatunza lakini badala yake aliwakeketa.
